As service providers expand fiber-deep networks to meet bandwidth demand, deploying reliable optical transceivers in harsh environments is crucial. Cisco addresses these challenges through its industrial temperature (iTemp) optical module line. These devices bring baseband digital Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transport directly to field nodes and headends, allowing operators to scale 10-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity.

Designed for Remote PHY (R-PHY) architectures, these transceivers simplify network design by converting digital signals directly into optical wavelengths over long links. Their ruggedized build ensures stable operation across extreme thermal variations (-40°C to 85°C), making them essential building blocks for modern cable access networks and edge deployments.

Product overview

The Cisco iTemp 10GBASE DWDM SFP+ transceiver portfolio provides both fixed-wavelength and tunable modules to suit various link budgets and network topologies. These pluggable units integrate with Cisco Converged Broadband Router (cBR-8) Digital Physical Interface Cards (D-PIC), Remote PHY Devices (RPDs), R-PHY shelf blades, and a wide array of standard Cisco switching and routing platforms.

For fixed-wavelength setups, Cisco provides three reach options covering 40 ITU C-band channels (ITU 20 to 59) with 100-GHz channel spacing. These include 20-km modules (RPHY-S10G-20K-XXX series), 40-km modules (RPHY-S10G-40K-XXX series), and 80-km modules (RPHY-S10G-80K-XXX series). They deliver dispersion-tolerant transmission without requiring external dispersion compensation hardware along the link.

To simplify spare parts management and speed up installations, Cisco offers the tunable DWDM-SFP10G-E-I module (also referenced as DWDM-SFP10G-C-I). It supports 100 tunable channels across the 50-GHz ITU grid over a 70-km reach. Featuring a limiting electrical interface, it plugs into standard SFP+ ports without requiring host board EDC.

Features and benefits

  • Supports 10.3125 Gbps LAN PHY data rates for complete IEEE Ethernet standards compliance.
  • Industrial temperature tolerance (-40°C to 85°C) ensures dependable performance in outdoor field hardware.
  • Hot-swappable form factor supports a pay-as-you-grow growth strategy to optimize initial capital outlay.
  • Cisco Quality ID feature allows host switches and routers to authenticate genuine transceivers.
  • Compliant with MSA standards (SFF-8431, SFF-8432, SFF-8472) for physical and monitoring compatibility.
  • Digital diagnostic monitoring enables seamless integration into network management platforms.
  • Color-coded bails allow fast visual identification: white for 20 km, red for 40 km, and green for 70/80 km units.
  • Wavelength tunability cuts inventory complexity by replacing multiple fixed spare optics with one transceiver.
  • Low-power design keeps energy consumption at a maximum of 2.3W for the DWDM-SFP10G-E-I tunable optic.

Use industrial temperature (iTemp) Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) SFP+ modules to integrate baseband digital DWDM transport into your R-PHY shelf blades, RPDs, or digital PICs.

Product overview

The Cisco® iTemp 10GBASE DWDM SFP+ Modules (Figure 1) are pluggable, temperature-hardened transceiver modules designed to deliver Remote PHY (R-PHY) capability in field or headend environments. They enable plug-and-play configuration of 10-Gbps Ethernet signals for simple configuration of R-PHY devices or shelves. There are 2 types of 10GBASE DWDM SFP+ modules, one tunable module and 3 reaches of fixed wavelength modules. The fixed wavelength modules have With 40 ITU C-band wavelengths and three different distance values available. The tunable module has 70km reach, and 100 50Ghz ITU C-band wavelengths it can be tuned to. Operators can control cost and wavelength assignments, and match link budgets in their fiber-deep networks. The standards-based SFP+ devices are compatible with existing passive filters and splitters, speeding deployments and minimizing service disruptions.
