In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, robust optical interconnects are fundamental to sustaining modern enterprise data architectures and global service provider transport networks. As network traffic surges due to cloud adoption and data-heavy applications, infrastructure demands reliable optical transceiver solutions. Cisco provides industry-standard optical interfaces engineered specifically for mission-critical network environments.
This summary outlines the capabilities of the Cisco 100GBASE CFP2 transceiver portfolio, focusing on the Cisco CFP2-100G-ER4 module. These modules enable network leaders to establish high-speed connectivity while optimizing total cost of ownership and operational flexibility.
Product overview
The Cisco 100GBASE CFP2 module family delivers 100 Gigabit Ethernet optical connectivity for core aggregation, data center interconnects, and service provider transport applications. The primary transceiver featured in this series, the Cisco CFP2-100G-ER4 module, enables data transmission over standard duplex single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652) using dual LC connectors. Operating across four discrete LAN-WDM wavelengths, it supports optical links up to 40 kilometers.
Technically, the Cisco CFP2-100G-ER4 handles internal multiplexing and demultiplexing across four optical lanes in the 1310 nm window (1295.6, 1300.1, 1304.6, and 1309.1 nm). The module complies with IEEE 802.3ba 100GBASE-ER4 specifications and supports OTU3 rates, ensuring integration across Cisco switches and routers. Consuming a maximum of 8W per module, it operates in temperatures from 0 to 70°C.
Cisco equips these modules with Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) and an automated quality identification feature. Optical connections require PC or UPC patch cords, with engineered attenuation needed for links beyond 30 km. Backed by a standard 90-day warranty, Cisco SMARTnet contracts, and Cisco Capital options, this optical family delivers enterprise reliability.
Features and benefits
- High-Speed Performance: Supports both 100GBASE Ethernet and OTU3 data rates for high operational efficiency.

Cisco CFP2-100G-ER4
The Cisco 100GBASE-ER4 (Figure 1) CFP2 module can support link lengths up to 40 kilometers on standard duplex single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652) terminated with LC optical connectors. The 100 Gigabit Ethernet signal is carried over four wavelengths. Multiplexing and demultiplexing of the four wavelengths are managed within the device. The Cisco 100GBASE-ER4 CFP2 module meets the IEEE 802.3ba requirements for 100GBASE-ER4 performance and also supports DOM of the transmit-and-receive optical signal levels.
