In today's digital business landscape, enterprise networks and service providers experience unprecedented bandwidth growth. Enterprise cloud adoption, edge computing, and data-heavy applications make high-capacity connectivity essential. Optical transceivers provide the critical foundation for this growth by ensuring reliable data transmission over long distances.
Cisco remains a leader in networking by delivering scalable optical solutions. The Cisco 400G QSFP-DD ER1 optical module marks an important advancement in extended-reach connectivity. By delivering robust 400 Gigabit Ethernet links over single-mode fiber, this module allows organizations to maximize existing infrastructure efficiently.
Transitioning to 400G architectures requires dependable extended-reach optics. This datasheet summary outlines how Cisco technology empowers organizations to scale networks seamlessly, reduce operational expense, and maintain signal integrity.
Product overview
The Cisco 400G QSFP-DD ER1 High Power module (product code QSFP-DD-400G-ER1-P) delivers 400 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for long-reach networking. Designed using the Quad Small Form Factor Pluggable Double Density (QSFP-DD) form factor, this hot-swappable module integrates with compatible Cisco switches and routers to support links up to 40 kilometers over single-mode fiber (SMF).
Meeting QSFP-DD Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) and OIF specifications, the Cisco 400GBASE-ER1-P transceiver effectively counters optical attenuation. This high-power option fits point-to-point topologies and optical transport networks, frequently removing the need for optical amplifiers and simplifying data center interconnect (DCI) and metro deployments.
The product line supports Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM), granting engineers visibility into metrics like power, temperature, and voltage. This telemetry enables IT managers to maintain optical health, streamline troubleshooting, and maximize network uptime.
Features and benefits
- Extended 40km Reach: Transmits 400G Ethernet traffic across single-mode fiber up to 40 km, minimizing extra optical amplification gear.
- High-Density Design: Features the QSFP-DD form factor, enabling high port density on switches and optimizing rack space utilization.
- Hot-Swappable Module: Allows insertion or removal without powering down equipment, simplifying maintenance operations.
- Real-Time DOM Telemetry: Delivers continuous diagnostic monitoring of power levels, temperature, and voltage for proactive management.
- Targeted Model Support: Includes the Cisco QSFP-DD-400G-ER1-P optical transceiver engineered for high performance in core environments.
- Power and Cost Optimization: Lowers power consumption per bit relative to older optics, reducing overall operational expenditure.
- Full Standards Compliance: Complies with IEEE 802.3 and QSFP-DD MSA guidelines, ensuring smooth multi-vendor compatibility.
The Cisco 400G QSFP-DD ER1 optical module enables 400GbE router to router traffic over dark fiber up to a 45 km distance.
Product overview
Cisco has expanded the range of 400G digital coherent QSFP-DD transceivers with the Cisco® 400G QSFP-DD ER1 optical module. Leveraging coherent technology innovations, the QSFP-DD ER1 optical module can transmit a single wavelength of 400G traffic directly from a router port up to a 45 km distance. The 400G QSFP-DD ER1 optical module’s small size and low power consumption make it an optimal choice for unamplified point-to-point dark fiber applications including data center interconnect, campus interconnect, wireless backhaul, and metro access/aggregation.
The Cisco 400G QSFP-DD ER1 optical module is mechanically compliant to the QSFP-DD Multi-Source Agreement (MSA). The QSFP-DD module contains a PCB with a 76 contact card-edge electrical interface to external host-side logic. The media interface is a duplex LC connector operating in C-band over single-mode fiber (SMF) carrying 400G 16 QAM coherent signal.
