The Cisco Optics 10GBASE SFP+ (Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus) portfolio offers a comprehensive range of high-performance, low-power Ethernet connectivity solutions designed for enterprise wiring closets, data center architectures, and service provider transport networks. These hot-swappable transceiver modules insert directly into Cisco SFP+ ports, enabling seamless network expansion and technology refreshes without requiring a complete hardware overhaul. By bridging physical media types across various distances, Cisco provides network architects with the flexibility needed to scale infrastructure efficiently.

In modern enterprise environments, these transceivers deliver robust performance across diverse cabling infrastructures. They support link lengths ranging from short-reach connections inside server racks to long-haul transmission spanning up to 80 kilometers over single-mode fiber. Fully compliant with IEEE 802.3ae, IEEE 802.3aq, and IEEE 802.3ba standards, these modules ensure interoperability with compliant third-party interfaces while maintaining deep integration with Cisco switches, routers, and optical transport platforms.

To streamline network management, Cisco incorporates digital optical monitoring (DOM) capabilities across the lineup. Network administrators can track real-time operational parameters such as optical output power, receiver input power, temperature, and supply voltage. This proactive visibility simplifies troubleshooting, minimizes planned downtime, and ensures optimal system reliability across demanding commercial deployments.

Product Overview

The Cisco 10GBASE SFP+ product line includes several distinct modules tailored for specific optical and copper cabling environments. For short-range multimode fiber (MMF) deployments, the Cisco SFP-10G-SR supports link lengths up to 300 meters over OM3 fiber, making it the standard choice for intra-building connections and high-density data center racks. The SFP-10G-SR-X variant extends this capability with an expanded operating temperature range for more rugged environments. For legacy multimode infrastructure, the SFP-10G-LRM module leverages Mode Conditioning Patch cords to achieve reach up to 220 meters over standard FDDI-grade MMF.

For longer distances requiring single-mode fiber (SMF), Cisco offers the SFP-10G-LR, which covers up to 10 kilometers for campus backbones and metropolitan networks. The SFP-10G-ER extends single-mode transmission up to 40 kilometers, while the SFP-10G-ZR delivers long-haul connectivity up to 80 kilometers without requiring external optical amplifiers. Additionally, Cisco provides specialized WDM solutions, including Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) and Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) SFP+ modules, which allow organizations to multiplex multiple 10G data channels over a single fiber pair to maximize fiber utilization.

Cisco also addresses direct-attach copper and short-reach requirements with cost-effective cable assemblies and specialized transceivers. The SFP-10G-AOC (Active Optical Cable) series provides lightweight, flexible interconnects for high-density rack configurations. For copper topologies, Cisco offers SFP+ Direct Attach Copper (DAC) twinax cables in passive and active variations, ideal for short-distance server-to-switch links within the same rack. Finally, the SFP-10G-T-X module enables 10GbE connectivity over standard RJ-45 Category 6a/7 copper cabling up to 30 meters, easing the migration from legacy copper systems to high-speed networks.

The Cisco® Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) XFP pluggable module (Figure 1) allows enterprise companies and service providers to provide scalable and easy-to-deploy 10 Gigabit LAN, WAN, and Optical Transport Network (OTN) services in their networks.

Main features of the Cisco DWDM XFP include:

      The Cisco DWDM XFP supports 10-Gigabit data rates from 9.9G to 11.1G (LAN, WAN, and OTU2/OTU2e).

      The hot-swappable input/output device plugs into an Ethernet XFP port of a Cisco switch or router to link the port with the network.

      The Cisco DWDM XFP supports the Cisco quality identification (ID) feature, which enables a Cisco switch or router to identify whether or not the module is an XFP module certified and tested by Cisco.

      The tunable Cisco DWDM XFP supports 80 tunable ITU 50-GHz wavelengths.

      Cisco DWDM XFP module supports digital optical monitoring capability.

Platform support

      Environmental conditions and power requirements:

    Operating temperature range: 32 to 158°F (0 to 70°C).

    Storage temperature range: -40 to 185°F (-40 to 85°C).

    The maximum power consumption per Cisco XFP module is 3.5W.
