The Cisco Wireless Gateway for LoRaWAN is a robust, carrier-grade solution designed to provide reliable Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. By utilizing unlicensed sub-GHz radio frequencies, this gateway enables cost-effective communication for battery-powered sensors and endpoints that require long-range transmission. It is engineered to perform in harsh outdoor environments while remaining versatile enough for indoor applications, making it an ideal choice for diverse use cases such as smart agriculture, asset tracking, utility metering, and environmental monitoring.
This gateway can function as a standalone unit or as a key component of the Cisco Industrial Asset Vision Solution. Its architecture is fully compliant with the LoRaWAN specification defined by the LoRa Alliance, ensuring interoperability with a wide ecosystem of certified devices. Whether deployed in public sector projects, enterprise networks, or service provider infrastructures, the gateway provides a secure and scalable foundation for managing IoT data traffic efficiently.
Product overview
Cisco offers two primary models of the Wireless Gateway for LoRaWAN, specifically the IXM-LPWA-800-16-K9 and the IXM-LPWA-900-16-K9, which cater to different regional frequency requirements across the globe. These units are built with a rugged, IP67-rated die-cast aluminum enclosure, allowing for flexible mounting options on poles, towers, or walls. The hardware is designed for high performance, featuring 16 uplink channels and integrated GPS/GNSS capabilities for precise timing and geolocation through TDOA and RSSI techniques.
The gateway provides significant deployment flexibility through its versatile backhaul options. It can operate as a standalone device connected via Ethernet or serve as a radio interface for Cisco Industrial Routers (such as the IR807, IR809, IR829, CGR-1120, and CGR-1240). This integration allows users to leverage advanced routing, firewall, and security features provided by Cisco IOS Software. Furthermore, the inclusion of a Linux Container (LXC) allows for the secure, isolated execution of third-party packet forwarder software, ensuring that the system remains adaptable to evolving network server requirements.
Features and benefits
- Versatile Backhaul: Supports standalone operation via Fast Ethernet or integration with Cisco Industrial Routers for Gigabit Ethernet, 4G/LTE, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Robust Security: Features advanced Cisco IOS security, including IPsec tunneling, firewall protection, and secure boot, to ensure data integrity across untrusted networks.
- Geolocation Capability: Provides high-accuracy positioning for endpoints using TDOA and RSSI, eliminating the need for power-hungry GPS modules in the end devices.
- Enhanced Capacity: Supports up to 16 concurrent uplink channels, significantly improving spectrum utilization and overall system capacity.
- Zero-Touch Provisioning: Simplifies large-scale deployments through the Cisco IoT Field Network Director (FND), allowing for automated configuration, firmware upgrades, and remote monitoring.
- Flexible Deployment: Supports both omnidirectional and sectorized antenna configurations to optimize radio coverage in high-density environments.
- Third-Party Integration: Utilizes Common Packet Forwarder (CPF) licenses to support various network server solutions based on the Semtech Basic Station protocol.
- Industrial Durability: IP67-rated, fan-less design capable of operating in extreme temperatures ranging from -40°C to 70°C.
- Power Options: Offers flexible powering methods, including 802.3at PoE+ and 48 VDC inputs.
Product overview
The internet bandwidth usage continues to grow as more people come online for the first time and more devices are connected per user. With this trend, it is no surprise that the demand for high-capacity systems and larger port densities is increasing rapidly. At the same time, we still also have a need for lower port densities to aggregate traffic from multiple channels.
With these requirements in mind, we designed the NCS-57C1-48Q6-SYS. It is a fixed chassis that combines low port densities of 1GE/10GE/25GE with higher port densities of 50GE/100GE/400GE and QSFP-DD optics, deep packet buffering, MACsec, Class C 1588 Precision Time Protocol (PTP), and Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) in an extremely power-efficient, 1-rack-unit package.
