Modern networking demands are driving a massive transformation in how service providers, enterprises, and web-scale operators build high-capacity infrastructure. As data traffic surges due to cloud services and 5G deployments, network architects must scale optical transport layers while reducing complexity and capital expenditure. Historically, high-speed dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) metro links required bulky, dedicated transponder equipment, adding power, space, and management overhead.

To address these challenges, the telecommunications industry has shifted toward IP-over-DWDM (IPoDWDM) architectures. This approach allows coherent transceivers to plug directly into standard routing and switching platforms, eliminating standalone transponder hardware. Cisco leads this evolution with high-power coherent optics in compact form factors, enabling operators to achieve extended reach and seamless optical integration directly from their switches and routers.

Product overview

The Cisco 100G QSFP28 ZR High Tx Coherent Optics Module delivers high-performance 100G DWDM connectivity directly within a standard QSFP28 form factor. Designed for edge, metro, and data center interconnect (DCI) networks, this module incorporates advanced digital signal processing (DSP) to provide coherent transmission capabilities without requiring external transponders. A key advantage of this transceiver is its elevated transmit power (High Tx), allowing direct interfacing with passive optical filters and DWDM systems without extra amplification.

Cisco offers this technology to support diverse operational needs across its portfolio. The product family includes the Cisco QSFP-100G-ZR-S module alongside the high-transmit coherent variants like the DP-100G-QSFP28-ZR+ optics. These products leverage standard QSFP28 ports across Cisco platforms, including the Cisco NCS 5500 Series, Cisco ASR 9000 Series, and Cisco 8000 Series routers. By delivering high optical output power, these modules easily overcome filter insertion losses, making them ideal for unamplified links up to 80 km and amplified metro networks spanning extended distances.

Features and benefits

  • High Transmit Output Power: Delivers enhanced optical Tx power, allowing direct connection to passive multiplexers and DWDM systems without extra amplification.
  • Compact QSFP28 Form Factor: Provides full 100G coherent DWDM capabilities in a standard footprint, maximizing router port density.
  • IPoDWDM Architecture: Eliminates standalone transponders, drastically reducing capital expenses, rack space, power usage, and operational complexity.
  • Advanced Coherent DSP: Features state-of-the-art digital signal processing to effectively mitigate chromatic dispersion for superior link quality.
  • Extended Reach Capability: Supports unamplified point-to-point links up to 80 km and longer spans over amplified optical metro networks.
  • Broad Platform Support: Integrates seamlessly across major Cisco router platforms, including the NCS 5500, ASR 9000, and Cisco 8000 Series.
  • Full C-Band Tunability: Operates across standard 50 GHz grid channels, optimizing inventory management and accelerating service deployment.
  • Lower Total Cost of Ownership: Optimizes energy consumption per bit while reducing physical equipment overhead across network facilities.

Cisco® QSFP28 100G ZR High TX Power coherent optics help operators extend 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100G) connectivity into access, aggregation, campus, and legacy Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer (ROADM)-based networks by delivering up to 0 dBm transmit power within a 6W QSFP28 power profile. Built as a vertically integrated product, the module combines Cisco Digital Signal Processor (DSP), photonics, firmware, and pluggable module design to bring tunable 100G Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transmission to widely deployed QSFP28 ports. The compact QSFP28 pluggable form factor replaces legacy transponder shelves in traditional access and aggregation architectures, driving CapEx and OpEx savings. Support for both Staircase Forward Error Correction (SC-FEC) and Generic Forward Error Correction (GFEC) enables interoperability with modern coherent links and legacy Optical Transport Network (OTN) transponders, while dual management capability based on the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Short-Device Form Factor (SFF) specification and Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) gives operators deployment flexibility across installed routers, switches, and newer host platforms.

Product overview

The Cisco QSFP28 100G ZR High TX Power Coherent Optics Module is a 100G DWDM pluggable module designed for edge, access, aggregation, enterprise/campus, cable/fiber deep, 5G wireless x-haul, and legacy ROADM-based network applications. It combines a tunable C-band laser, dual-polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) coherent modulation, intradyne coherent detection, advanced electronic link equalization, and up to 0 dBm transmit power in an industry-standard QSFP28 form factor with a 6W high-power operating profile.

The module is designed to make coherent transmission practical in 100G network segments where customers need greater reach and higher fiber efficiency. It enables simplified IP over DWDM deployments in Cisco Routed Optical Networking architectures while preserving compatibility with existing optical infrastructure. Its 0 dBm high-transmit-power capability helps support engineered deployments through legacy ROADM paths and other higher-loss DWDM environments. SC-FEC support enables high-performance 100ZR operation, and GFEC support provides interoperability with legacy OTN transponders. The module also supports both SFF-based management for installed-base routers and switches and CMIS-based management for platforms adopting the latest module management standard. Actual reach depends on fiber type, optical path loss, Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR), dispersion, channel plan, ROADM cascade, and other link engineering conditions.

The Cisco QSFP28 100G ZR High TX Power Coherent Optics Module is intended for engineered optical links. Link design should account for transmit power, receiver input power, optical path loss, OSNR, chromatic dispersion, polarization effects, connector loss, amplifier noise figure, filter narrowing, and channel loading. Reach values are representative of supported application spaces and are not a substitute for optical path engineering.
