High-speed networking infrastructure continues to evolve to meet the growing demand for bandwidth across modern enterprise and service provider networks. As data traffic expands across geographically dispersed locations, optical modules capable of long-reach transmission have become essential for maintaining continuous, reliable connectivity.

The Cisco 100GBASE-Q100-ZR4-S EA QSFP28 module is built to address these long-distance networking challenges. By delivering a high-performance 100 Gigabit Ethernet connection in a compact form factor, this transceiver allows network operators to extend their reach efficiently without sacrificing port density or operational flexibility.

Product overview

The Cisco 100GBASE-Q100-ZR4-S EA transceiver is a hot-swappable optical module designed for long-reach 100 Gigabit Ethernet links. It converts four electrical channels of 25 Gbps payload into four LAN-WDM optical signals, multiplexing them for transmission over standard single-mode fiber (SMF, G.652). The module can reach distances of up to 80 kilometers on standard single-mode fiber without external amplification, and can extend up to 100 kilometers when paired with an Optical Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA).

This datasheet highlights the Cisco 100GBASE-Q100-ZR4-S EA Module as part of Cisco's extended-reach optical portfolio. The module is engineered for high interoperability, working seamlessly with IEEE 802.3ba-compliant 100GBASE-ZR4 optical interfaces and offering operational compatibility with 100GBASE-ER4 Lite modules over shorter distances.

By plugging directly into standard Cisco QSFP28 ports, this module provides a cost-effective and space-efficient solution for interconnecting data centers, enterprise campus backbones, and service provider aggregation sites across extended distances.

Features and benefits

  • Extended Reach Transmission: Supports 100G links up to 80 km over standard single-mode fiber (G.652) without optical amplification, and up to 100 km when using an EDFA.
  • Compact QSFP28 Form Factor: Fits into standard QSFP28 ports, maximizing panel density while keeping power consumption low.
  • Standards-Based Interoperability: Fully compliant with standard 100GBASE-ZR4 specifications and offers interoperability with 100GBASE-ER4 Lite modules.
  • Hot-Swappable Convenience: Can be plugged in or removed without powering down host switches or routers, minimizing network downtime.
  • Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM): Supports real-time monitoring of key metrics, including laser transmit power, optical receive power, operating temperature, and supply voltage.
  • Simplified Infrastructure: Eliminates the immediate need for complex, bulky line cards or external transponder systems for medium-to-long reach optical connections.

Cisco Q100-ZR4-S-EA

The Cisco Q100-ZR4-S-EA supports link lengths of up to 80 km over a standard pair of G.652 single-mode fiber with duplex LC connectors. The 100 Gigabit Ethernet signal is carried over four wavelengths. Multiplexing and demultiplexing of the four wavelengths are managed within the device. The module requires the use of FEC on the host platform.
