Introduction
The Cisco Catalyst 8400 Series Secure Routers represent a significant evolution in enterprise-grade edge networking, designed specifically to meet the rigorous demands of modern, cloud-connected organizations. As businesses increasingly migrate their critical workloads to multi-cloud environments, the traditional WAN architecture often struggles to maintain performance, security, and scalability. Cisco developed this platform to bridge that exact gap, offering high-performance routing coupled with enterprise-grade security right out of the box.
At its core, this series is engineered to deliver robust SD-WAN capabilities that simplify network management while drastically reducing operational complexity. IT teams are constantly pressured to do more with less, and these routers provide the centralized visibility and automation needed to streamline daily operations. By integrating advanced security protocols directly into the hardware, Cisco ensures that the network edge remains protected against sophisticated cyber threats without sacrificing the speed and bandwidth required by today's data-heavy applications.
Product overview
The Cisco Catalyst 8400 Series is built upon a modern, highly resilient multi-core CPU architecture designed to handle massive amounts of network traffic with minimal latency. It serves as a foundational building block for software-defined wide area networks, giving enterprise branches, campuses, and data centers the horsepower they need to run advanced network services simultaneously. The hardware design focuses heavily on high availability, featuring redundant power supplies and field-replaceable units to ensure maximum uptime for mission-critical business operations.
Scalability is another hallmark of this product line, allowing organizations to seamlessly expand their network capabilities as their business grows. Whether an enterprise is connecting thousands of remote sites or managing heavy data flows between regional headquarters and public clouds, the 8400 series adapts dynamically. Furthermore, the platform supports a wide array of interface modules, providing the connectivity flexibility required to integrate legacy systems with cutting-edge networking technologies smoothly and cost-effectively.
