The Cisco ASA 5500 Series 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Security Services Module (4GE SSM) is designed to enhance network security by providing granular control over traffic segmentation. By allowing administrators to divide network traffic into distinct security zones, this module helps organizations protect their critical assets more effectively.

It serves as a high-performance expansion tool for the Cisco ASA 5500 Series appliances, offering versatile connectivity options that cater to the specific needs of data centers, campus environments, and enterprise edges. Its primary goal is to provide a robust, flexible infrastructure that supports complex security policies while maintaining high availability.

Product overview

The 4GE SSM is equipped with four RJ-45 ports and four Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports, giving users the flexibility to utilize either copper or optical connections for each port. While the module features eight physical ports in total, it supports a maximum of four ports in concurrent service, allowing for tailored deployment based on specific site requirements.

This module significantly expands the input/output capabilities of the Cisco ASA 5500 Series. Specifically, it increases the port density for the ASA 5510 Security Plus, as well as the ASA 5520 and 5540 appliances. By integrating this module, businesses can scale their existing hardware to handle more demanding network configurations and connectivity needs without needing to replace their entire security infrastructure.

Features and benefits

  • Enhanced Segmentation: Protects critical assets and isolates workgroups by creating secure and unsecured network zones.
  • Granular Policy Control: Enables the creation of specific policies for traffic flows, user authentication, and protocol inspection to ensure comprehensive network security.
  • Flexible Connectivity: Offers a choice between copper and fiber connections, making it suitable for diverse environments like data centers and enterprise edges.
  • High Availability: Supports demanding Active/Active and full mesh firewall deployments, providing protection against cable failures.
  • Redundancy: Facilitates redundant connections to eliminate link-level weaknesses and minimize the risk of costly network downtime.

Cisco ASA 5500 Series 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Security Services Module

Flexible, Focused Security

Provide more granular security for your network by using the Cisco ASA 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Security Services Module (4GE SSM) to better segment network traffic into separate security zones. This high-performance module has four 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports and four Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) ports to support both copper and optical connections. You can choose copper or fiber connectivity for each of the four ports, providing flexibility for data center, campus, or enterprise edge connectivity (with a maximum of four ports in service concurrently). The module extends the I/O profile of the Cisco ASA 5500 Series to a total of three Fast Ethernet and six Gigabit Ethernet ports on the Cisco ASA 5510 Security Plus, and eight Gigabit Ethernet ports and one Fast Ethernet port on Cisco ASA 5520 and 5540 appliances.

The 4GE SSM provides the following benefits:

  • Protects critical assets and isolates workgroups through the use of secured and unsecured zones
  • Enables you to create policies for traffic flows, user authentication, and protocol inspection to provide ultimate control over network security
  • Protects the most demanding Active/Active and full mesh firewall deployments against cable failure
  • Enables redundant connections to help you eliminate a commonly overlooked weakness at the link level and further reduce exposure to costly network downtime
