Rapid expansion across modern cloud architectures, enterprise infrastructure, and artificial intelligence workloads is driving an unprecedented surge in bandwidth demand. Traditional transport designs often struggle to scale economically, requiring complex transponder systems that increase capital expenditure and ongoing operational overhead.

To overcome these scalability hurdles, modern transport strategies leverage Routed Optical Networking. By embedding coherent DWDM optics directly into high-density routing and switching hardware, organizations eliminate redundant transponder layers, minimize physical footprint, reduce energy usage, and lower total cost of ownership.

Product overview

Cisco addresses next-generation transport needs with its comprehensive portfolio of 800G QSFP-DD and OSFP coherent pluggable optical transceivers. These high-performance modules deliver exceptional density, energy efficiency, and operational agility for data center interconnects, metro aggregation, and regional backbone networks.

The baseline QDD-800G-ZR-S and OSFP-800G-ZR-S modules comply fully with OIF 800ZR industry standards. They provide cost-effective, high-throughput point-to-point connections across amplified links up to 120 kilometers, making them an optimal fit for hyperscale cloud architectures and high-density data center fabrics.

For extended reach and versatile paths, the QDD-800G-ZR-M-S and OSFP-800G-ZR-M-S transceivers deliver multi-rate flexibility from 400G to 800G. Leveraging advanced modulation and OpenZR+ specifications, these optics supply the enhanced performance necessary to navigate complex regional and metro core topologies.

Completing the portfolio, the QDD-800G-ER-M-S and OSFP-800G-ER-M-S (Bright ZR+) transceivers feature high optical transmit power (0 to +1 dBm). These optics are engineered to integrate seamlessly into existing brownfield ROADM infrastructures, eliminating dedicated external booster amplifiers and transponder shelves.

Features and benefits

  • Form Factor Versatility: Available in QSFP-DD and OSFP form factors, allowing seamless integration across high-capacity routing and switching platforms.
  • Standardized Interoperability: Full compliance with OIF 800ZR and OpenZR+ agreements ensures smooth multi-vendor network integration.
  • Dynamic Multi-Rate Support: Software-programmable capacity from 400G to 800G optimizes spectral efficiency and reach based on link requirements.
  • High Launch Power: Bright ZR+ variants provide high optical transmit power for direct deployment across legacy ROADMs without booster amplifiers.
  • Capital and Operational Savings: Direct router integration eliminates standalone transponder chassis, decreasing power, cooling, and rack footprint.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Built-in optical monitoring and real-time telemetry enable predictive maintenance and simplified network management.

Product overview

Cisco Smart SFPs enable applications such as TDM over Packet, migration and integration of Transport Networks into Packet Switching Networks, interoperability with any standard SAToP equipment, and aggregation of SONET/SDH links. These Smart SFPs can operate with Cisco’s HD CEM solution on the NCS4200/NCS540/ASR900 product family today.

Cisco TPoP (Transparent PDH over Packet) Smart SFP

The TPoP Smart SFPs convert T1, E1 or T3 incoming signals into Gigabit Ethernet traffic, enabling the integration of Synchronous Interfaces onto Ethernet Networks.

This conversion is based on SAToP (RFC4553) protocol.

Cisco CSoP (Channelized SONET/SDH over Packet) OC-3/STM-1 Smart SFP

The CSoP Smart SFP converts OC-3 or STM-1 incoming signals into Gigabit Ethernet traffic enabling the integration of Synchronous Interfaces onto Ethernet Networks.

Additionally, it channelizes a STM-1 signal into 63 (E1) or an OC-3 signal into 84 (DS1) independent Circuit Emulated Services (CES), and vice versa, it converts 63 (E1)/84 (DS1) independent CES streams into a fully channelized signal.

Cisco TSoP (Transparent SONET/SDH over Packet) OC-3/STM-1 Smart SFP

The TSoP Smart SFP provides a fully transparent method for transporting SONET/SDH traffic across the Ethernet network, a method for encapsulating SONET-SDH bit-streams as pseudo wires over a packet-switching network. It transmits and receives OC-3/STM-1 optical signal on the fiber interface, and transmits and receives packets via electrical Gigabit Ethernet interface towards and from the hosting system.

Cisco TSoP (Transparent SONET/SDH over Packet) OC-12/STM-4 Smart SFP

The TSoP Smart SFP provides a fully transparent method for transporting SONET/SDH traffic across the Ethernet network, a method for encapsulating SONET-SDH bit-streams as pseudo wires over a packet-switching network. It transmits and receives OC-12/STM-4 optical signal on the fiber interface, and transmits and receives packets via electrical Gigabit Ethernet interface towards and from the hosting system.
