The Cisco CWDM SFP+ 10 Gigabit Ethernet solution offers enterprise network architects and service providers an efficient, scalable, and cost-effective pathway for expanding network capacity across campus, data center, and metropolitan access networks. By leveraging Coarse Wavelength-Division Multiplexing technology, this optical solution maximizes data throughput over existing single-mode fiber installations without requiring additional physical fiber deployment.
Modern enterprise operations face rapidly expanding bandwidth demands driven by network virtualization, cloud storage, and high-volume data traffic. By enabling up to eight 10 Gigabit Ethernet streams to travel concurrently over single-mode fiber pairs, Cisco addresses these scaling challenges directly, significantly reducing capital expenditures associated with laying new optical cabling while ensuring robust network performance.
Product overview
The Cisco CWDM SFP 10 Gigabit Ethernet product portfolio comprises eight distinct optical transceiver modules, each precisely tuned to a specific channel wavelength within the optical spectrum: 1471 nm, 1491 nm, 1511 nm, 1531 nm, 1551 nm, 1571 nm, 1591 nm, and 1611 nm. Designated under the CWDM-SFP10G product family, these modules deliver dedicated 10 Gbps optical transport over standard single-mode fiber strands.
These optical transceivers offer comprehensive protocol versatility, supporting key industry data rates including 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN at 10.3125 Gbps, 10 Gigabit Ethernet WAN at 9.95328 Gbps, OC-192 SONET/SDH at 9.95328 Gbps, OTU-2 at 10.709 Gbps, OTU-1e at 11.0491 Gbps, and OTU-2e at 11.0957 Gbps. All modules feature standard dual LC/PC optical connectors and operate reliably across commercial operating temperatures from 0 to 70 degrees Celsius.
Features and benefits
● Scalable Optical Multiplexing: Transports up to eight 10 Gigabit Ethernet channels over a single pair of single-mode fiber strands.
● Investment Protection: Expands optical network capacity without incurring the high costs of installing new physical fiber optic cables.
● High Network Availability: Utilizes multi-channel network design and ring architectures to protect links against physical fiber cuts.
● Layer 2 and Layer 3 Support: Integrates with protocol redundancy mechanisms at channel endpoints to ensure uninterrupted service.
● Multi-Rate Protocol Compatibility: Supports 10G LAN, 10G WAN, OC-192, OTU-2, OTU-1e, and OTU-2e optical framing standards.
● Hot-Swappable Form Factor: Plugs into SFP+ ports on Cisco switches and routers without requiring system shutdown or service interruption.
● Pay-As-You-Populate Model: Enables flexible incremental channel expansion as organizational bandwidth requirements grow over time.
● Standardized Optical Connectivity: Equipped with dual LC/PC optical connectors on single-mode fiber for easy patch cord integration.
Overview
The Cisco® CWDM SFP 10 Gigabit Ethernet solution allows enterprise companies and service providers to provide scalable and easy-to-deploy 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The product set enables the flexible design of highly available, multiservice networks.
The Cisco Coarse Wavelength-Division Multiplexing Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus (Cisco CWDM SFP+) solution is a convenient and cost-effective solution for the adoption of 10 Gigabit Ethernet in campus, data-center, and metropolitan-area access networks (Figure 1).

Cisco CWDM 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP Solution
Key features and benefits
Scalability
The Cisco CWDM SFP+ solution enables the transport of up to eight channels of 10 Gigabit Ethernet over Single Mode Fiber (SMF) strands.
High availability
The Cisco CWDM SFP 10 Gigabit Ethernet solution takes advantage of a multichannel architecture and the inherent protection of ring architectures. The solution enables:
● Use of Layer 2 and Layer 3 redundancy and failover mechanisms at the channel endpoints (Cisco CWDM SFP+) to build highly available links
● Use of two-path link configurations in a ring architecture to provide protection from fiber cuts
Investment protection
The Cisco CWDM SFP+ solution enables enterprises and service providers to increase the bandwidth of an existing 10 Gigabit Ethernet optical infrastructure without adding new fiber strands. The solution can be used in parallel with other Cisco SFP+ devices on the same platform.
Technical specifications
Cisco CWDM 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFPs
A Cisco CWDM SFP 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP is a hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into an SFP+ port or slot of a Cisco switch or router, linking the port with the fiber-optic network.
