Cisco SONET/SDH Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) modules are compact, hot-swappable optical transceivers designed to deliver reliable, high-speed optical connectivity for enterprise and service provider networks. These modules allow network operators to seamlessly interface Cisco routers and switches with optical transport systems, supporting business-critical operations without interrupting overall system uptime.
By conforming to recognized international standards, these optical modules help organizations scale their network capacity and extend reach across varying geographical distances. They play a pivotal role in simplifying network upgrades, reducing capital expenditures, and enabling a flexible infrastructure capable of handling evolving data demands.
Product overview
The Cisco SONET/SDH SFP product family offers a versatile selection of transceivers tailored to different optical speeds and link lengths. The portfolio begins with OC-3 / STM-1 SFPs, which provide a transmission rate of 155 Mbps. These are followed by OC-12 / STM-4 SFPs delivering 622 Mbps, and high-capacity OC-48 / STM-16 SFPs running at 2.488 Gbps.
Each speed tier within the portfolio includes specific reach optical variants designed for diverse physical deployments. These encompass Short Reach (SR-1 / I-1, I-4, I-16), Intermediate Reach (IR-1 / S-1.1, S-4.1, S-16.1 and IR-2 / S-1.2, S-4.2, S-16.2), and Long Reach (LR-1 / L-1.1, L-4.1, L-16.1 and LR-2 / L-1.2, L-4.2, L-16.2) modules. Together, these options cover link distances ranging from short inter-office spans of a few hundred meters up to long-haul optical links spanning up to 80 kilometers using single-mode fiber.
In addition to fixed-rate optics, the portfolio features Multirate SONET/SDH SFPs capable of auto-sensing and operating across multiple line rates (OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48) on a single optical interface. This capability gives network administrators the flexibility to provision bandwidth dynamically, simplify spare-parts inventory, and protect initial hardware investments as network throughput requirements scale.
Features and benefits
- Hot-Swappable Design: Allows modules to be installed or replaced without shutting down host routers or switches, ensuring continuous network availability and reducing maintenance downtime.
- Industry Standard Compliance: Fully compliant with Telcordia GR-253-CORE and ITU-T G.957 / G.958 standards, guaranteeing seamless interoperability with third-party optical transport equipment.
- Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM): Supports real-time monitoring of operational parameters including laser bias current, optical output power, receiver input power, transceiver temperature, and supply voltage.
- High Density and Port Efficiency: The small form-factor layout enables higher port density per line card, optimizing rack space utilization and lowering power consumption in data centers and central offices.
- Flexible Reach Options: Offers a complete spectrum of reach optical profiles (SR, IR-1, IR-2, LR-1, LR-2) to accommodate diverse fiber infrastructures over both single-mode and select multimode fibers.
- Multirate Versatility: Multi-rate options allow a single transceiver to support multiple operational speeds, significantly simplifying inventory management and lowering operational overhead.
- Standard LC Duplex Interface: Utilizes compact, industry-standard LC connectors to provide reliable optical connections and simple patching.
The Cisco industry-standard Small Form-Factor Pluggable Interface Converter (SFP) for Packet-Over-SONET/SDH (POS), optical networking, and ATM applications (Figure 1) are hot-swappable optical interfaces that plug into a variety of ports on Cisco router interfaces. These SFP optics support OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48 data rates for multimode, short-reach, intermediate-reach, and long-reach applications.

Cisco SFP Optics for POS/SDH and ATM Applications
Product overview
Cisco® SFP optics for POS and ATM applications plug into a variety of SFP-based POS, TDM and ATM interfaces on Cisco router products. This line of SFP optics supports the following three data rates at various reaches: OC-3/STM-1 (155 Mbps), OC-12/STM-4 (622 Mbps), and OC-48/STM-16 (2,488 Gbps) (Table 1).
The SFPs are compatible with the SONET/SDH and ATM standards, and support the digital diagnostic functions specified in the SFF-8742 Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) and the extended operating temperature range from 23 to185°F (-5 to 85°C).

Digital diagnostic functions
The Cisco SFP optics for POS and ATM applications allow real-time access, through the digital diagnostic monitoring interface, to a set of transceiver parameters such as optical output power, optical input power, temperature, laser bias current, and transceiver supply voltage.
The ability to read these parameters in real time greatly enhances the installation, activation, and troubleshooting of these SFP optics.
