Modern data centers, enterprise networks, and cloud providers face growing demands for bandwidth, driven by expansion in virtualization and data-intensive applications. As organizations outgrow traditional 10 Gigabit Ethernet infrastructures, moving straight to 100G can prove cost-prohibitive or complex. Cisco 25GBASE SFP28 technology bridges this gap by providing a direct, cost-effective migration path that improves throughput while maintaining operational simplicity.
By leveraging single-lane 25G optical technology, Cisco enables IT departments to scale physical network infrastructure seamlessly. This module portfolio delivers top-tier networking performance while preserving energy efficiency, allowing businesses to maximize fiber plant investments, streamline architecture, and prepare environments for next-generation workload demands.
Product overview
The Cisco 25GBASE SFP28 portfolio encompasses a comprehensive suite of transceivers and direct-attach options engineered for diverse operational scenarios. For short-range data center applications, the portfolio features the Cisco SFP-25G-SR-S for multimode fiber up to 100 meters, alongside the SFP-25G-CSR-S module which extends short-reach optics up to 300 meters. For campus and metro connections, the Cisco SFP-25G-LR-S supports single-mode fiber up to 10 kilometers, while the SFP-25G-ER-S delivers extended reach up to 40 kilometers.
To optimize high-density multiplexing, Cisco provides specialized WDM optical solutions. These include 25G CWDM SFP28 modules for multi-wavelength distribution across enterprise links and 25G DWDM SFP28 transceivers for long-haul capacity expansions. Additionally, for single-strand fiber efficiency, Cisco offers SFP-25G-BIDI transceivers operating over bidirectional links for 10km and 20km distances.
For intra-rack cabling, Cisco offers reliable direct-attach options. The line includes Cisco SFP-H25G-CU Direct Attach Copper (DAC) cables in lengths from 1 to 5 meters, as well as Cisco SFP-25G-AOC Active Optical Cables from 1 to 10 meters. Furthermore, breakout solutions like the QSFP to 4x SFP28 AOC and copper breakout cables facilitate high-density connections between 100G QSFP28 ports and 25G server endpoints.
Features and benefits

Overview
Over the years, fiber-based access has proven to be a cost-effective way to reach customer premises to deliver managed business and residential services. Ethernet or Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies such as Gigabit PON (GPON) are supported by the Cisco® ME Series Switches. Cisco ME Series products support any fiber-based (FTTx) access scenarios, including Fiber To The Home (FTTH), Fiber To The Building (FTTB), Fiber To The Curb (FTTC), Fiber To The cell (FTTc), and Fiber To The business (FTTb). Figure 1 illustrates the Cisco GPON solution.
