Introduction

The Cisco 8800 Series line cards represent a significant leap forward in high-performance networking, specifically engineered to meet the escalating demands of modern service provider and data center environments. As network traffic continues to surge due to the proliferation of cloud services, video streaming, and 5G connectivity, the underlying infrastructure must evolve to provide greater bandwidth, lower latency, and improved energy efficiency. These line cards are designed to integrate seamlessly with the Cisco 8000 Series routers, providing a robust foundation for massive-scale networking. By leveraging advanced silicon technology, Cisco has created a modular solution that allows network operators to scale their capacity without the need for a complete hardware overhaul, ensuring that investments remain protected as network requirements grow over time.

At the heart of this innovation is a focus on operational simplicity and architectural flexibility. The 8800 Series line cards are built to handle the complexities of modern routing protocols while maintaining the high availability that enterprise and service provider networks demand. By utilizing a programmable architecture, these cards enable network administrators to deploy new services and features rapidly, reducing the time-to-market for critical infrastructure updates. This approach not only addresses the immediate need for higher throughput but also prepares organizations for future technological shifts, such as the transition to 800G and beyond. The design philosophy centers on creating a sustainable, high-density environment that minimizes the physical footprint while maximizing the data-carrying capacity of the core network.

Product overview

The Cisco 8800 Series line cards are powered by the Cisco Silicon One architecture, which is widely recognized for its ability to deliver industry-leading performance in a power-efficient package. These line cards are specifically optimized for the Cisco 8800 Series chassis, offering a diverse range of port densities and speeds to suit various deployment scenarios. Whether the requirement is for high-density 100G, 400G, or even 800G connectivity, these cards provide the necessary throughput to support the most demanding traffic patterns. The integration of high-speed SerDes technology ensures that signal integrity is maintained even at the highest data rates, which is crucial for long-distance transmission and complex network topologies.

Beyond raw performance, the 8800 Series line cards are designed with a deep understanding of the economic realities faced by network operators. By consolidating multiple functions into a single, high-density card, Cisco helps reduce the overall power consumption and cooling requirements of the data center. This efficiency is further enhanced by the modular nature of the 8000 Series platform, which allows for "pay-as-you-grow" scalability. Operators can start with the capacity they need today and expand as their traffic demands increase, avoiding the pitfalls of over-provisioning. The hardware is also built to support advanced telemetry and monitoring capabilities, providing deep visibility into network health and performance, which is essential for proactive troubleshooting and maintenance in large-scale environments.

Furthermore, the software-defined nature of these line cards ensures that they remain relevant in an era of rapid digital transformation. The Cisco IOS XR operating system, which powers these cards, provides a stable and feature-rich environment that supports a wide array of routing protocols and security features. This software-hardware synergy allows for granular control over traffic engineering, enabling operators to optimize their network paths and ensure that critical applications receive the necessary bandwidth and priority. By combining cutting-edge silicon with a mature and reliable software stack, the Cisco 8800 Series line cards offer a comprehensive solution for building the next generation of high-performance, resilient, and scalable network infrastructures.

Cisco 8000 overview

The Cisco® 8000 Series Routers combines the revolutionary Cisco Silicon One processor, Cisco IOS® XR software, and a set of clean-sheet chassis to deliver a breakthrough in high-performance routers. In particular, the Cisco 8000 modular systems portfolio, ranging from 4 slots to 18 slots, provides the benefits of a flexible deployment size and can be tailored to multiple use cases ranging from high-speed performance core to metro aggregation while providing high system density with up to 648x 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports in the 18-slot chassis. The performance of the Cisco 8000 distributed systems goes hand in hand with the evolution of the line cards.

The latest fourth-generation P200 processor pushes the performance to 51.2 Tbps in 5-nm technology and delivers high-scale routing with deep buffering. P200 processor innovation helps the Cisco 8000 Series to expand the addressable use cases from core, peering to DCI, collapsed core in the network including scale out and scale across architecture in the data center.

This data sheet introduces our new P200-based line card and their capabilities. This line card deliver an industry-leading high density of 36x 800GbE per slot in the distributed systems.
